October is here - yeaaaaa

Hey folks: I have been having trouble posting pictures to the web site so I might have to go purely text-based from now on...The past few weeks have been quite busy for me. We have been doing our usual "outside the wire" missions, going to city neighborhoods and assessing the living conditions, taking pictures, chatting with the locals, etc...and of course handing out candy and beanie babies whenever we can. This past week I took some folks out to Lake Dokan in the northeastern part of Iraq and we actually got to swim in a huge lake. President Talabani (spelling?) has a house there - he is the President of Iraq. Anyway, we had a great time there - there was work involved but I try to have fun (in a safe way of course) while we are out sometimes. A couple of days ago we assessed a city sector/neighborhood and got to check out one of the city's oldest fortresses...apparently this historical landmark is at least 2,000 years old - that was fun.

I am so glad we are in October - another month"bites the dust".

Sunday, October 2nd. Yes, indeed, I'm also glad October is finally here. Fall is such a welcome season after such a brutally hot summer.

Today, I'm working on an essay for the Writing about Film class, and the two films that will be featured in the essay are The Thing from Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Made in the 1950s, these science-fiction films reveal a hidden sub-text of postwar America, a time of McCarthyism, the Cold War, and so much more. I'm going to present the New Historical Theory and Cultural Perspective of that time in history and weave it into the message of the two films. It should work, if I can keep my focus on the essay long enough to churn out something reasonably intelligent :) I feel my attention swerving already . . . hunger pangs tell me it's lunchtime . . .

Keep safe.

Love,

Mum

Spent this past Sunday with your family having and early dinner before the second session of conference. I love your wife. She is so wonderful. I just want you to know that and your girls are great. I showed them how to bypass the cable box to get conference cos the channel 10 they were getting wasn't the one we had gotten and comcast don't seem to be on top of things like they think/hope they are.
The council seems to be read the book of mormon and be forgiving. Hope you got to see conference or can read the talks. It's so wonderful to have a living prophet that, as old as he is, looks so well.
Lots of aroha
